“Nobody has ever taught us how to manage our emotions. Instead, it can cause diseases, depression and emotional outbursts. Sometimes, we believe that emotions are a female thing and a man has to work even harder to oppress theirs.īut really, emotions are a part of your biology. When we enter the workforce, we learn that “emotional” is not compatible with “professional”, and at times the word “emotional” is even used as a way to insult someone between the lines. (That’s my generation! Yeay!) And then there is society preaching us the shoulds of life. Actually, already in 1995, Daniel Goleman wrote about a “worldwide trend for the present (note: in 1995) generation of children to be more troubled emotionally than the last: more lonely and depressed, more angry and unruly, more nervous and prone to worry, more impulsive and aggressive”. Some of us grow up with emotionally unavailable parents. Or something else? I would feel a bit awkward telling them they only get in touch when they want something.Some of us spend a lot of time indulging in their emotions (remember those teenage years?) and some of us prefer to ignore their feelings and suppress them.

I'm not sure if I should just get over myself and respond. And haven't had a response since then until today asking for help with something else. I've received another email last month from someone I haven't heard from in almost 2 years asking for help with something, I sent them back what they needed. If I message a couple of months later to see how they are, I won't get a reply until about 12 months later when they need help again. Whatever it is, I will offer my experience or help them practically with something to support their business. (a work thing usually, something to help with their business). I'll receive an email or text from someone I haven't spoken to for 2 years or more with a message along the lines of 'Hi! How are you? How's the family? Oh by the way, is there any chance you can help me with. I've noticed over the last 4 or so years that several 'friends' only get in touch when they need help with something.
